driving distance

There was a "syntactic" problem with your statement - NOT a "numerical" one.

You had a "miles" dangling in there. Jomo (and I) did not like that. Try to avoid that.

These oversites would make difference in class-room(grades). This can pull down a grade of A+ to A-.
Yes, you're % correct. Thanks a lot.

Morning, would you give a a hint as to what syntactical error?. I am trying to understand what you said but getting nowhere.
You are not reading the responses carefully and wasting lot of your time:

NO!!

The units for 'x' should 'in'. Think about it ........

Yes, i read it many times and racked my brain thinking what you meant for dangling.
Do you mean they proportion is not set up so as for units to cancel out properly?.

miles/miles cancel out to 1. In 1/miles = miles, the miles do not cancel out

Consider this 1/3 = 3/9, this is correct. Do the 3 cancels out? If yes, then we get 1=9. Does 1=9?

0.5 in/40 mi = xin/280mi
Now, I think I can cancel out the units leaving x by itself to get the answer in inches.

0.5 in * 280 mi /40 mi * x in
Miles cancel out
=140/4
= 3.5

[math]\dfrac{0.5\ in}{40\ miles} = \dfrac{x\ in}{280\ miles}[/math]
[math]\dfrac{0.5\ in}{40\ miles}(\dfrac{280\ miles}{in}) = \dfrac{x\ in}{280\ miles}(\dfrac{280\ miles}{in})[/math]
Can you cancel out the units and reduce fractions and post the exact results?

`0.5 in (280 mi )= `x in (280 mi)`
40mi 1in 280mi in
`0.5 * 7 = x`
x =3.5
The distance in inches is 3.5.`
I put the back quotes like lev taught me to, but I am typing something the wrong way cos it is not coming out well.
