Hi, dear tutors and professors:
I need help solving the following problem.
'Over the past 20 seasons a college basketball team won 22 games during its best season and 14 games during its worst season. If the team had 12 seasons in which they won 18 games, which of the following amounts represents the minimum possible number of games they won during the 20 seasons?'.
Choices:
300
336
360
290

Given
Total amount of seasons=20
best season= 22 games won
worst season=1 games won
they won 18 games in each one of 12 seasons.

Can you drop a hint to start me off?.
Thanks in advance
eddy,

eddy,

Got you. I'll try it. Thanks.
Pen and paper are my best friends when I don't know where to start.
I'll keep that in mind from now on. Thanks

Not just pen and paper. This is almost the same problem.

12 seasons they won 18 games.
1 season won won 22 games
The above count for 13 season. So 7 seasons are not accounted for.
How many games do you think they should win for each of those seasons to have the fewest number of games won. Hint: when you add on the least possible amount then you will have the smallest total. This is the same as your earlier problem as lev888 mentioned.

You know they had 12 seasons in which they won 18 games. So you know they won 12*18= 216 games. You know they had at least one season in which they won 22 games so that makes 216+ 22= 238 games. That leaves 20-13= 7 seasons and you know the worst the did was 14 games in a season. So the worst they could have done was if they won only 14 games in all of those 7 seasons.

Awesome! .
My reasoning should have gone this way:
20 seasons in total
12 seasons= 18 games won(in each one of those seasons)
=12*8=216 games
+ 1 season in which they won 22 games
that makes 13 seasons and 216+22=238 games won
So, I have 13 seasons accounted for.
I have left 7 of those seasons.
The worst they did was to win 14 games.
so the minimum possible in those seven seasons had to be 14.
14 games * 7 seasons=98 games won

Then, in thirteen seasons they won 238 games
in their seven worst seasons they won 98
`238 + 98
=336` games the minimum possible of games won in all of the twenty seasons.
Awesome!
Thanks a lot !
