A total of 10,000 dollars is to be divided between Janet and Prissy, with Prissy to receive 3000 dollars less than Janet. How much will each receive?
Solution:
Divide 10,000 into two parts:
Prissy = x - 3000
Janet = x
x + x - 3000 = 10,000
2x - 3000 = 10,000 ..................................... typo edited
2x = 10,000 + 3000
2x =13,000
x = 13,000 ÷ 2
x = 6500
Janet will get 6500 dollars.
How about Prissy?
Prissy = x - 3000
Prissy = 6500 - 3000
Prissy = 3500
Prissy will get 3500 dollars.
PROVE:
Prissy + Janet = 10,000
3500 + 6500 = 10,000
10,000 = 10,000...It checks to be true.
What do you say?
