This is the problem I have, but I am not sure how to go about it. Could someone please help or explain? Thanks in advance.

Solve for b: (5,b^2), (2,4b), m=-1

Is "m" somehow related to "b"? What is the significance of the parentheses? Please clarify. It might help if you included the complete text of and instructions for the exercise. Thank you.

Eliz.

That is all I am given in the problem, however, we are working on slopes so m=slope of the line and I am sure the others are points of the line. There are no examples in the book that I can use as a reference and this was the problem on the worksheet for homework. Thanks.

Well, since you were considerate enough to tell us that these are 2 points, and a slope, then:
(b^2 - 4b) / (5 - 2) = -1
b^2 - 4b = -3
b^2 - 4b + 3 = 0
(b - 3)(b - 1) = 0
b = 3 or b = 1

If that don't ring your chimes, look up "slope"...if you're not too tired...
